On 6th January, 1915, the 2nd King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division moved into trenches at Cuinchy near La Bassée. On 10th January the battalion regained some observation posts on a nearby railway embankment that had been captured by the enemy at the beginning of the month but during the afternoon of 12th January, after a heavy artillery bombardment, the enemy attacked and reoccupied some of these posts after targeting them with minenwerfers, heavy trench mortars which did tremendous damage and buried some men alive. After an hour of this 8 men from the garrison of 56 managed to get back to their main lines. William Holliday died from wounds on 14th January and it is likely that he was wounded during this action. |
